Associate Professor Ryan Paul (Ngāti Maru, Hauraki) is a Diabetologist and Endocrinologist who is proud to still call Waikato home after moving here at 6 months of age. Ryan is experienced in all areas of general endocrinology with a special interest in diabetes and obesity.

Biography
Associate Professor Ryan Paul (Ngāti Maru, Hauraki) is a Diabetologist and Endocrinologist who is proud to still call Waikato home after moving here at 6 months of age. Ryan is experienced in all areas of general endocrinology with a special interest in diabetes and obesity. Ryan is well respected in his field and recently convened the development of national guidance for Aotearoa New Zealand for type 2 diabetes and is a member of the Australasian Monogenic Diabetes Guidance Group. With his clinical expertise, Ryan has many leadership roles including being the Immediate Past-President of the New Zealand Society of Endocrinology (NZSE) and President Elect of the New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes (NZSSD). He also has many national clinical advisory roles including for Manatū Hauora, PHARMAC, HQSC, Health Pathways, Healthify, Diabetes and Eating Disorder Awareness, and is currently working with Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora in developing a Diabetes National Action Plan. Ryan has key roles in teaching including being a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians New Zealand Adult Medicine Committee and establishing New Zealand’s first Advanced Diabetes Management Course. Ryan was awarded the Clinical Educator of the Year by the New Zealand Medical Council in 2019.
Ryan is very active in diabetes and endocrinology research and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Waikato. He is an honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland and a Clinical Associate of the Maurice Wilkins Centre. He was recently awarded a Health Research Council (HRC) Foxley Fellowship and has twice been a Kudos Awards finalist. He has published many peer-reviewed articles in high-ranked journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, and his research work is regularly presented at major European and American meetings. His current research primarily focuses on reducing inequities for Māori and Pacific peoples with diabetes, and diabetes and technology. His PhD investigated the endocrine mechanisms responsible for males having more skeletal muscle than females.
Ryan remains actively involved in the community and is a current Board of Trustees Member and has held leadership roles in Scouts, Athletics and Sports Clubs. He still plays and coaches cricket and football, and a great way to start any appointment is discussing the current state of New Zealand sports teams! Due to his commitments with Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora Waikato, the University of Waikato and the Aotearoa Diabetes Collective, Ryan is currently only working alternate Fridays in the rooms.
